People are often surprised to learn that the visible turf is the easy part of an installation. What separates a lawn that still looks flawless in fifteen years from one that ripples and shifts in two is entirely what happens underneath. Here's how a proper San Angelo turf install is built, step by step.
First, the existing lawn and a few inches of soil come out. This clears the organic material that would otherwise decompose and settle unevenly under the turf, and it makes room for a stable engineered base. In much of the Concho Valley this means working through hard clay and caliche, which is exactly why the excavation has to be done properly rather than rushed.
Next comes grading. The site is shaped so water flows away from your home and off the lawn rather than pooling on top. Good drainage is what keeps turf from developing soft, sunken spots, and it's especially important in our clay soil, which doesn't drain well on its own.
A permeable aggregate base is laid, leveled, and machine-compacted in layers. This is the foundation the entire lawn rides on — a firm, free-draining platform that resists the freeze-thaw and drought-swell cycles that wreck shortcut installs. A premium turf on a poor base will fail; a mid-grade turf on an excellent base will last. We invest here on purpose.
The turf is rolled out, allowed to acclimate, then precisely cut and fitted. Seams are matched by blade direction and bonded so they disappear, and the perimeter is secured. Finally, the correct infill for your use — landscape, pet, or putting — is brushed in at the right rate to support the blades and keep them standing upright.
The blades are power-broomed, the site is cleaned completely, and we walk the finished lawn with you. From there, the maintenance routine is about as easy as it gets: an occasional rinse and a brush of high-traffic areas.
Honestly, not much — that's the point of hiring a pro. Clear the area of furniture and pet items, flag any private irrigation or low-voltage lighting lines you know about, and let us handle the rest.
