A lot of Concho Valley homes come with concrete that has quietly outlived its usefulness. An old carport pad off Sherwood Way, a cracked back patio in Bentwood, a bare slab where a shed used to sit near Goodfellow AFB. Tearing it out is expensive and messy, so homeowners keep asking us the same thing: can we just put turf on top of it? The short answer is yes, and in a lot of San Angelo yards it is actually the smarter move.
When laying turf over a slab makes sense
Concrete is a great sub-base for synthetic grass when the slab is structurally sound and reasonably flat. If your patio is not spalling apart, not heaving at the joints, and drains water off its surface rather than pooling in the middle, it is a solid candidate. We see this work beautifully on covered patios, rooftop and second-story decks, apartment courtyards, and side yards where digging into our stubborn caliche soil would cost more than the turf itself. You keep a clean, level foundation and skip the excavation entirely.
Where we pump the brakes is on slabs that are badly cracked, sinking on one side, or sitting in a low spot that already holds water after a Concho Valley thunderstorm. Turf will not fix a drainage problem it inherits from the concrete underneath it. In those cases we talk through repair, a self-leveling overlay, or removal before anything green goes down.
Drainage is the whole ballgame
A natural lawn drinks water down into the soil. A slab does not, so every drop that hits your turf has to go somewhere. This is the single detail that separates a professional job from a weekend project that smells like a swamp by August. We solve it two ways. First, we confirm the concrete already sheds water toward an edge or a low point. If the surface is dead flat or dishes toward the middle, we build a thin sloped base or add drainage channels so water always has an exit. Second, we use fully permeable turf with hole-punched backing so liquid passes straight through instead of sitting on top.
For pet owners this matters even more. Urine needs to rinse through and off the slab, not pool against it. We pitch the base so a quick hose-down or a good rain carries everything to the edge and away from the house.
How we prep a San Angelo slab before turf
Prep is quick compared to a soil install, but it is not nothing. We pressure-clean the concrete to strip off dirt, old paint, and anything slick. We patch major cracks and grind down any lips or trip points so the finished surface reads flat underfoot. Then we roll out a shock-absorbing foam underlayment. That pad does two jobs at once in West Texas: it gives the turf a soft, natural feel instead of the hard thud of grass laid straight on cement, and it creates a micro-channel for water to travel to the drains.
The turf is then cut to the slab, glued and seamed at the edges rather than staked (you cannot stake concrete), and locked down with a perimeter adhesive that holds through our summer heat and gusty spring winds. Infill goes in last to weight the blades and keep them standing tall.
Heat, comfort, and the West Texas sun
Here is an honest caveat for the Concho Valley: turf over a bare, sun-baked slab runs warmer than turf over cooled soil, because the concrete stores heat all afternoon. On a covered patio this is a non-issue. On a fully exposed pad, we recommend a lighter-colored turf, a heat-reducing infill, and the foam pad, which together take a real bite out of surface temperature. A quick spray from the hose cools it instantly on the hottest July days, and shade sails or a pergola make it comfortable barefoot even in a Sherwood-area backyard.
Cover the slab or rip it out?
Cost usually decides it. Removing concrete in San Angelo means demolition, hauling, disposal fees, and then building a fresh base in caliche that fights every shovel. Covering a sound slab skips all of that, which is why turf-over-concrete is frequently the cheaper, faster option. The exception is a slab that is failing anyway. If it is cracking and sinking, you are better off removing it once rather than paying to dress up a surface that will keep moving.
